What is the best series of wedges to have in a golf bag? Making the best choice is difficult with the many different options on the market today, so here is some good advice on how to make the right choice for you.
Most golfers buy either gap or lob wedges to add to their sets without really knowing what one will suit them best. All the major manufactures will produce their version and combination of wedges like Callaway, Taylormade, Ping, Mizuno, Titleist and many more. Then there is the loft combination and what bounce to choose.
Buying a lob, gap or lob combo is easy as long as you find out what gaps you have in your golf equipment. To do this the first step is to find out what the loft on your pitching and sand wedges are, once you have done this you can fill the hole that appears.
For example,
Mizuno MX 19 Irons,
PW 46
Gap 51
SW 55
Lob 60
The gap between the PW and the SW in loft is 9 degrees. This is a gap which can be filled as the loft difference should be around 4 degrees. The 51 degree gap wedge would close the loft gap giving the golfer a full range of approach shots. The 60 degree lob wedge is a good add on if the golfer would like a higher approach into and around the greens.
To choose the correct wedge combo you must first discover what loft your PW and SW are, then try to fill any holes that might appear by trying to keep the loft around 4/5 degrees between each iron.
